ABT MOTORSPORT HISTORY

OVER 75 YEARS OF DRIVE FOR MOTORSPORT

When we at ABT say or write that motorsport is part of our DNA, then you can take us by our word: 75 years ago, the then 14-year-old Johann Abt competed in his first car race in our home town of Kempten - and thus founded the colourful and successful motorsport tradition of the company ABT.

The spectators at the Kempten grass track race in 1950 can hardly believe what they are seeing with their own eyes. ''No way!" Here comes a 14-year-old boy with a refurbished old ‘Armed Forces bucket car’ and drives this DKW ‘Master class’ with starting number 7 like a big boy. No, like a really big one. Because the boy with the smart, usually grumpy look at the steering wheel gets a place on the podium in his very first car race.

The very young racing talent is called ''Abt Hansl". His correct name is Johann. With his appearance in Kempten, he lays the foundation for a motorsport success story that begins in 1950 and continues to this day - even if in completely different cars and racing formats.

Full-throttle
ambassador

First on two, then on four wheels: Johann Abt writes the first chapters of ABT motorsport history from the 1950s onwards.

  • 1950: Johann Abt competes in his first car race in Kempten.
  • 1952: Johann Abt starts his racing career on a motorbike and wins the ‘Oberallgäuer Bergfahrt’.
  • 1955: Johann Abt becomes motorbike team world champion.
  • 1960: Johann Abt finishes second behind Hans Stuck Senior in the German ‘Berg-Meisterschaft’.

First Tuning
activities

'From the racetrack to the road' - this slogan was already coined and lived in the 1960s.

  • 1962: Johann Abt becomes head of the family business and from then on combines his racing with the tuning business.
  • 1965: Johann Abt makes his first guest start with Abarth.
  • 1967: Johann Abt becomes a semi factory driver for Abarth and wins all but one of his races.

More than 300
winner trophies

Johann Abt contests his last complete hill season in 1974 in the open-top Abarth 2000.

  • 1970: Johann Abt becomes European Touring Car Champion with his Abarth.
  • 1974: Johann Abt contests his last complete racing season.
  • 1978: ABT supports Audi Sport's first factory entry in the German Rally Championship.

Stepping Stone

RALLY TIMES

A little-known chapter in ABT's motorsport history: in 1978, the company supported Audi's first factory entry in the German rally championship. After Johann Abt had been successful in the European Touring Car Championship with privately entered Audi 80s since the mid-1970s, the four-wheel drive expert supported the brand with the four rings in making its 80 rally car durable and fast. The Audi quattro is developed in parallel on this basis. With this 4x4 drive concept, Audi revolutionised all-wheel drive technology beyond rallying from 1981 onwards.

‘That was a great year,’ says driver Joachim Knollmann, looking back. "We laid the foundation for the later very successful motorsport history of Audi Sport. I had a great relationship with Johann Abt, who often looked after the car himself at the rallies and picked up the tools. He was extremely straightforward, but if you knew him well, you knew where you stood."

The next
generation

Johann Abt's sons carry on the motorsport gene. Christian Abt celebrates several successes in motocross.

  • 1983: Johann Abt's son Christian becomes German motocross champion.
  • 1985: As in the previous year, Hans-Jürgen Abt drives in the first version of the Volkswagen Polo Cup.
  • 1986: Christian Abt wins the Motocross Cup for the first time.
  • 1987: Christian Abt wins the Motocross Cup for the second time.

Stars from
tomorrow made

ABT was already successful in formula racing in the 1990s - with some well-known names.

  • 1991: Christian Abt becomes champion in the ADAC Formula Junior.
  • 1992: Ralf Schumacher starts his career in the ABT Formula Junior team.
  • 1993: ABT enters the ADAC GT Cup with a racing version of the Audi Coupé C5.
  • 1996: Milestone: ABT completes its first STW season.

The first
big title

Christian Abt brings the first major touring car title of modern times to Kempten as STW champion.

  • 1998: ABT competes in touring car racing as a factory team for Audi for the first time: starting in the STW Cup.
  • 1998: The successful story of the brand cups begins with the ADAC Touring Junior Cup.
  • 1999: Christian Abt becomes STW champion.
  • 2000: ABT enters the DTM. The beginning of an era.

OVER 25 YEARS AT THE TOP

ABT AND THE DTM

'We had the entrepreneurial courage to enter the DTM as a small private team in 2000,“ remembers Hans-Jürgen Abt. In the meantime, the 'Abts” have been represented in Germany's most popular racing series for more than a quarter of a century and are the most successful active DTM team with five driver and five team championships.

The success story began at the turn of the millennium with the self-developed Abt-Audi TT-R, with which ABT sensationally won the title as a private team against the Mercedes-Benz and Opel factory teams in 2002. From 2004 to 2020, ABT was the factory team for Audi in the DTM. In 2004, Mattias Ekström won the title in Audi's debut year. From 2007 to 2009, the Allgäu-based team achieved the only title triple in the history of the DTM.

DTM
Champions

A perfect start: ABT takes their first victories and titles as a private team in the DTM at the beginning of the 2000s.

  • 2001: A date for history: Laurent Aiello clinches the first DTM victory for ABT on 6th May 2001.
  • 2002: The sensation is perfect: Laurent Aiello wins the DTM title for the ABT private team.
  • 2003: Peter Terting becomes one of ABT's DTM drivers.
  • 2004: Drivers' title for Mattias Ekström, team title for ABT - the start as Audi works team is perfect.

Triple-
winner

Triple success: the triple title in the DTM is complemented by further successes in the GT and Formula Masters.

  • 2007: Mattias Ekström wins his second DTM title and thus the third for his ABT team.
  • 2008: Timo Scheider is the new DTM champion - the fourth title for ABT.
  • 2009: ABT wins the DTM (Timo Scheider), GT Masters (Christian Abt) and Formula Masters (Daniel Abt) titles.

More
Highlights

Another DTM title and the start of a new era: ABT as a founding member of the all-electric Formula E.

  • 2010: The highlight of the ABT brand cup history is the Scirocco R-Cup with natural gas. Hans-Jürgen Abt even takes part in one race.
  • 2011: ABT wins its third DTM team title. The season also includes a show event in Munich's Olympic Stadium.
  • 2014: Lucas di Grassi wins the first Formula E race in history for ABT in Beijing on September 13.

PIONEER AND MASTER OF ELECTRO-RACING

ABT AS A FOUNDING MEMBER OF FORMULA E

Alongside the decision to enter the DTM at the beginning of the 2000s, the entry into Formula E at the end of 2013 is probably Hans-Jürgen Abt's most courageous motorsport decision. At the time, the all-electric formula series was still ridiculed by many and not really taken seriously. That has changed a decade later: As an official FIA World Championship, the series enjoys a high reputation and is causing a stir with a high-calibre driver field, innovative technologies and ever new ideas for the sporting format.

ABT's courage has paid off, as the team has been one of the championship's protagonists right from the start. Lucas di Grassi, who has raced alongside Daniel Abt for many years, wins the first race in Beijing after a dramatic final lap. In the first and second seasons, he narrowly missed out on the title with third and second place, but always kept the fight open until the final weekend. In the third season, he turned the tide in a real thriller finale, giving ABT its most valuable international title to date. Even today, di Grassi is the most successful driver in the field with the most trophies.

International
success

Another milestone: Lucas di Grassi wins the title for ABT in his third Formula E season.

  • 2015: Continuation of the brand cup era: ABT is the exclusive entry partner for the Audi Sport TT Cup, which competes on the DTM weekends.
  • 2016: ABT wins its fourth team title in the DTM and also has a new winning driver in its ranks with Nico Müller.
  • 2017: Lucas di Grassi wins the Formula E title with his ABT team. It is the biggest international success for both of them to date.

Many reasons
to celebrate

The success continues: Between 2018 and 2020, ABT collects further victories and titles in Formula E and DTM.

  • 2018: Daniel Abt is the first German to win a Formula E race. At the end of the season, he wins the team title with Lucas di Grassi.
  • 2019: The DTM enters a new era of turbo engines. ABT remains on course for victory with Nico Müller and Robin Frijns.
  • 2020: ABT's time as the Audi works team in the DTM ends with the fifth team title.
  • 2021: With Audi's withdrawal from Formula E, ABT's involvement in the series is also paused.

New
Horizons

The first victory in a new racing series, a strong comeback - and the end of a successful era.

  • 2022: Klara Andersson and Nasser Al-Attiyah take the first victory in Extreme E for ABT in Uruguay.
  • 2023: We are back: ABT returns to Formula E with CUPRA as a partner after a one-season break.
  • 2024: To the final flag: The DTM partnership between Audi and ABT ends with the 2024 finale.
